Frequently asked questions
What is the standard tipping amount in the US?
In the United States, it is customary to tip between 15% and 20% for standard sit-down restaurant service. Exceptional service often warrants 20% to 25%, while 10% to 15% is typical for buffets or less-than-stellar service.
Should I calculate the tip before or after tax?
Traditionally, gratuity should be calculated based on the pre-tax subtotal. However, many people calculate the tip based on the final post-tax total for the sake of simplicity. Our calculator works perfectly either way—just enter the amount you prefer to base your tip on into the “Bill Amount” field.
How much should I tip for delivery or takeout?
For food delivery, a standard tip is 15% to 20% of the total bill, or a minimum of $3 to $5, depending on the distance, order size, and weather conditions. For standard takeout that you pick up yourself, tipping is traditionally optional, but leaving 10% or a few dollars is a widely appreciated gesture for the staff preparing and packaging the order.
How does the split bill feature work?
Our calculator takes the total bill (including your selected tip) and divides it equally by the number of people you enter. It provides both the “Tip Per Person” and the “Total Per Person” so everyone knows exactly how much they need to contribute.
